Acne can affect any body part that has oil-secreting glands or hair follicles. Whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, papules, pustules, cysts, and nodules are the types of acne and it could happen on the face, shoulders, back, neck, chest, and upper arms.
Body acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged by a combination of dead skin cells and the skin’s naturally occurring oils, or sebum. Hair follicles are connected to sebaceous glands, which normally excrete oil at the surface of the follicle to lubricate the hair and skin. When the body overproduces sebum, it can cause these follicles to become clogged.
Some of the reasons that causes body acne are environmental pollutants, bacteria trapped on the surface of the skin, and cosmetics. Friction from clothing and touching the affected areas can irritate these blemishes and make symptoms worse.
You may prevent occurrence of body acne by avoiding medications that contains androgens (male hormones) and lithium, and reduce the pressure inserted to your back such as carrying backpack or sports equipment. These objects may trigger acne machanica, which is a type of back acne.
